The project brief called for an escape from reality, a studio environment for an artist working from a home base, seeking a sense of detachment from the house and reminders of household demands when engaging with her art.

Studio and dwelling is separated for this reason by a series of interconnecting ponds and streams that encircle the studio and provide the sanctuary required.

The studio embraces the garden beyond the house turning itself away from the dwelling thus strengthening the sense of detachment between them. The playful lines of the structure express the free spirit of the artist and remind us we are now in a different place, far removed from the realities of day to day living, a special place for the nurturing of creative spirit.
